Dutchman Robin Haase captured the rain-delayed Sunrise ATP Challenger circuit tournament and won his first qualifying match at the Sony Ericsson Open, the second ATP Masters Series event of the year, in Miami, on Monday.
In the Sunrise final, unseeded Haase beat sixth seed Sebastien Grosjean of France 5-7, 7-5, 6-1 lifting the trophy around 1:30pm. He then headed south by car to Miami where just before 10pm he wrapped up a 6-4, 6-0 win over South African Rik de Voest in the first round of qualifying.
"It's a very strange feeling," said Haase. "It's wonderful that I could win both matches. It's mentally tough to focus on both matches, especially as one was a final, but I wanted to play in Miami really badly.
"You do not want to expend too much energy. Today I started off the Sunrise match really badly, losing six games in a row to find myself 7-5, 3-0 down. But I fought back and won.
"I feel physically strong and fit right now. Against de Voest I started the match well, playing aggressively and could attack him and make him run a lot."
Haase, who has risen 44 places to a career-high No. 59 in the South African Airways ATP Rankings this year, will now meet Serbian Dusan Vemic in the second round of qualifying at the Sony Ericsson Open in Miami.
Vemic captured the doubles title at the Sunrise Challenger with compatriot Janko Tipsarevic 6-2, 7-6(5) over Kristof Vliegen and Peter Wessels.
The 20-year-old Haase has already reached three ATP-level quarterfinals at Chennai (l. to Cilic), Rotterdam (l. to Llodra), and Zagreb (l. to Ancic) this season.
